Johns and Klatt Roads Roundabout
As a Highway Safety Improvement Project (HSIP), the construction of this roundabout provided safer circulation, with the accompanying benefit of a high level of aesthetic improvement within the road corridor at this location. The design resulted from client direction to limit views through the intersection, make the center highly visible, minimize maintenance, and provide an aesthetic feature within the neighborhood. The project process included documents such as FHA Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, initial development of multiple conceptual designs, refinement of a preferred concept using digital 3D models and 3D printing of a physical model, and the development of construction documents. This included winter renderings to ensure that all-season aesthetics and function were considered. Beyond aesthetics, the final design was shaped through the use of low-maintenance materials (such as rock mulches that reinforced the 'spiral' design), vertical focus in the center of the roundabout with heights getting lower toward the edge, the lighting of the central feature to ensure clear visibility in winter/dark conditions, and selection of concrete coloring and surface treatments for longevity and visual reinforcement of vehicle circulation.
